Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Frederick Crane NICHOLLS GC

A stockbroker in civilian life: served with BEF in France 1940: Joined SOE Operations Section from Staff College, Camberley, March 1942. Volunteered for active service in the Balkans: posted to Cairo, August 1943: parachuted into Albania as GSO1 to Brigadier ‘Trotsky’ Davies, 15 October 1943: assumed command when Davies was captured, 8 January 1944. Suffered from very severe frostbite and unable to walk: dispersed his mission: eventually made contact with another SOE team who sought to provide medical treatment. Died from gangrene, 11 February 1944.
