Pre-war engineer, inspector of air accidents; flew VIP flights (including Churchill) with No 24 Squadron, 1939/40; posted to No 419 Flight, the RAF’s first special duties unit, November 1940; flew many of the earliest parachute operations for SIS and SOE; commanded No 138 Special Duties Squadron when it moved its base to Tempsford, March 1942: flew the Anthropoid team to Czechoslovakia to assassinate Heydrich, December 1941; formed No 334 Wing in North Africa for special duties operations in the Mediterranean; returned to UK to work on airborne elements of D-Day and Marketgarden.
