Fought in the Spanish Civil War being wounded and decorated; joined the British Army then MI(R), December 1939: Participated in an abortive operation to Norway, April 1940; then to Spain and Portugal, June 1940; Stationed at Gibraltar until March 1942 then cross-Channel raids with the Small Scale Raiding Force; served with SOE in Albania and Montenegro, August 1943-March 1944. Member of Freston Mission parachuted to Poland December 1944 which was overrun by the Russians: volunteered for service in the Far East, serving with distinction in Siam until the end of the war.
