Pre-war, carried out reconnaissance of Norwegian coast by yacht for SIS’s Section D: sent to Stockholm when Germans invaded Norway: returned to UK via Finland. Appointed to D Section Home Defence Organisation: commissioned in Army: posted to SOE and transferred to RNVR: sent to Cornwall to organise Helford River naval base, of which he remained in command, carrying out operations to France, until December 1942: sailed two French fishing vessels to Mediterranean to set up Naval Section of Massingham in North Africa. Commander of No. 1 Special Force in Italy from September 1943.
