Pre-war regular pilot in RAF; crash landed in Occupied France, September 1940; after many adventures escaped to Spain returning to his squadron in June 1941; appointed Flight Commander, then Commanding Officer, of No. 161 (Special Duties) Squadron, parachuting SOE and SIS agents into several occupied countries and carrying out pick up operations to France, 1942-44; commanded No 357 (Special Duties) Squadron at RAF Jessore, Calcutta, flying sorties over Burma, Thailand, French Indo-China and Malaya in Liberators and Dakotas, 1945; post war, became Deputy Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces in Central Europe.
