Served with RAF in France 1939-40. Liaison officer with Free French and Polish air forces in UK: RF Section SOE staff officer, January 1942-February 1943. Parachuted into France on Seahorse Mission to assess Resistance: returned by Lysander, April 1943.  Member of Mission Marie Claire to carry out damage assessment on Resistance groups, September 1943: returned by Lysander, November 1943. Dropped on third mission, Asymptote, to rescue his colleague Pierre Brossolette.  Arrested Paris, March 1944: deported to Buchenwald, August.  Assumed identity of a dead Frenchman and escaped, April 1945.
