Joined SOE Naval Section, September 1941 at Helford River, taking part in clandestine sea operations to Brittany until October 1942. Flew to Gibraltar as advance representative of Massingham Naval Section: joined HMS Minna for three abortive operations to Algeria to land stores ahead of Torch. Served with Brandon and Massinghammissions in North Africa until July 1943, leading a detachment which held the Cap Serrat lighthouse for two months and carrying out landing operationsin Tunisia. Head of Massingham French Section, September 1943 until the liberation of France.
