Left Occupied Norway in March 1941 by fishing boat to join Norwegian armed forces in the United Kingdom; appointed to lead the Gunnerside team to sabotage the German Heavy Water plant at Rjukan, Norway; parachuted 16/7 February 1943 and led the section that planted the explosives, then led his group on a 400 kilometre trek to the Swedish frontier; parachuted back to northern Norway in summer 1943 on Operation Fieldfare to prepare local resistance; after enduring great physical hardships for 18 months, forced by ill-health to return to England, March 1945.
