Joined Scots Guards, 1939: posted to 5th Battalion preparing to become part of British Expeditionary Force to Finland: joined Guards Commando that moved to the Middle East as No 8 Commando and part of Layforce, February 1941. While recovering from injuries Stirling formulated the concept of the SAS. Took part in early SAS operations in the Western Desert and was five times Mentioned in Dispatches: captured on operations in Tunisia, January 1943: made several escape attempts from POW camps in Italy before being sent to Colditz Castle where he remained until the end of the war.
